Cloud migration in 2026: a practical checklist for growing teams

Moving to the cloud is far more than lifting and shifting servers. Done well, it lowers cost, improves resilience, and unlocks speed. Done poorly, it multiplies your bills and your risk.

1. Start with the "why," not the "how"

Before touching a single workload, get clear on the business outcome you are chasing — lower operating cost, faster releases, better uptime, or the ability to scale on demand.

2. Inventory and classify your workloads

Map every application, database, and dependency. For each one, choose a migration strategy:

• Rehost ("lift and shift") — fastest, minimal change, good for a deadline.
• Replatform — small optimizations like a managed database to cut ops overhead.
• Refactor — re-architect for cloud-native scale where the payoff justifies it.
• Retire — decommission what nobody actually uses. The cheapest win of all.

3. Design for cost from day one

Cloud bills spiral when teams provision for peak and never scale back down. Set budgets and alerts before you migrate, right-size instances, and tag every resource.

The teams that control cloud spend treat cost as an engineering metric, not a finance afterthought.

4. Bake in security and compliance

Identity, encryption, and least-privilege access should be part of the migration plan — not a follow-up project. Enable logging and monitoring on day one.

5. Migrate in waves, and validate each one

Never move everything at once. Start with a low-risk workload, prove your process, and roll forward in waves with rollback plans ready.
