You do not need an enterprise budget to be secure. Most breaches exploit basic gaps, not sophisticated attacks. Master these seven habits and you close the doors attackers use most.

1. Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere

MFA is the single highest-return security control you can enable. Even if a password leaks, an attacker cannot get in without the second factor.

2. Keep everything patched

Unpatched software is the most common way in. Enable automatic updates and retire tools that no longer receive security fixes.

3. Use a password manager

Reused passwords turn one breach into many. A password manager generates and stores unique, strong passwords for your whole team.

4. Back up — and test the restore

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two media types, one offsite. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan.

5. Train your people
